¡HELP! I Want My Children
Gabriela Arias Uriburu
The touching struggle of a mother to recover her children abducted by the husband
On December 10, 1997, Gabriela Arias Uriburu woke up very early. She had many running errands in downtown Guatemala city. Before leaving, she said goodbye to her three children whom she left with the babysitter. She was in a hurry and she was very happy: after facing hard months living together with her husband, Imad Shaban, the Family Court had granted her custody of her children. Suddenly, her mobile phone rang; she answered it without knowing that at that very moment, her life would suffer a tragic turn: her husband was taking – without asking her and without previous notice – their three children, Karim, Zahira and Sharif, on holidays to Atitlan. When she returned home and opened the door, what she saw was devastating.
From that moment onwards, events occurred relentlessly: meetings with attorneys, police persecutions, forced entries, negotiations, obscure accusations of Satanism, anonymous calls, threats, her brother-in-law complicity in the abduction – the brother-in-law’s Machiavellian figure seems to emerge from the most successful suspense movie – Interpol and arrest warrants, escape hypothesis, meetings with State senior officials and the surprising appearance of a photograph which would unveil the mystery.
With the hand on your hearth ant the rhythm of the best thrillers, “Help! I want My Children” is the crude testimony of a mother ready to use every means to reach her only goal in life: her children’s recovery.
JORDAN, THE TRIP TO FETCH MY KIDS
Gabriela Arias Uriburu
“Jordan, the trip” is the heroic trip of a woman who is trying to reencounter with her kids abducted by their father. Seven years have gone by since little Karim, Zahira and Sharif were ripped from Gabriela Arias Uriburu but the vital impulse of this mother-warrior does not decline but rather increases as time goes by and difficulties intensify.
This is the story of a family tragedy as well as the suffering, passion and determination of a mother who travels the world and challenges powerful men not only for the solution of her own case, but to set legal precedent at an international scale in order to protect children in their present helplessness situation before adults’ arbitrariness.
